Nintendo has been one of the most popular brands in gaming of all time. There have been a lot of games like F-Zero 99 that have been released over the years that players are enjoying online. On top of that, there are more coming on the way and there is even a new Nintendo console that is rumored to be coming out within a year or two.
All of the most recent Nintendo consoles have had online capabilities where players can purchase games online and they can play with other people. Servers are needed to keep these consoles online but Nintendo does not want to keep servers up for dated consoles. That is why we recently got news that Nintendo is shutting down online servers for the Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo Wii U.
When Are Nintendo 3DS And Wii U Servers Are Shutting Down
Nintendo recently posted a Tweet saying that Nintendo 3DS and Wii U servers will shut down in April 2024. The Nintendo 3DS was the last handheld exclusive console that Nintendo launched and it first appeared on the market back in early 2011. The Wii U followed the Nintendo 3DS a year later and had a lot of online games available on it.
This means that the servers have been up for at least 12 years before they got shut down. Games like Kid Icarus Uprising had online capabilities and now will be restricted to a single-player game. A lot of fans are disappointed in this decision as this will severely restrict what players can do with their 3DS or their Wii U.
What Is Affected By The 3DS And Wii U Server Shutdown
The major thing that will be affected by the shutdown of 3DS and Wii U servers is Pokemon Home. Pokemon Home is a space where players can store their Pokemon across multiple different games. So players who had several Pokemon games on the 3DS, including the virtual console games, have a limited time to get these Pokemon into Pokemon Home. It should be noted that Pokemon Bank and Poke Transporter will be unaffected by the shutdown for now. Players will still be able to transfer their Pokemon to Pokemon Home to collect them once the initial server shutdown happens. However, time is limited and they will eventually go offline.
Once the servers are shut down, any Pokemon on a 3DS or Wii U are stuck there forever and cannot be brought to any Switch games. On top of the Pokemon changes, players can no longer purchase digital games on these consoles and they can no longer play against other players online.
