Magic The Gathering’s Foundations set drops in just a few weeks, but as we’ve come to expect, Wizards of the Coast has plenty planned for 2025.
What’s interesting this time around is that the team says Foundations will be legal until at least 2029 in Standard format, and as a result, it’ll form the backbone of the 2025 sets and beyond.
Looking further down the road, 2027 will see set rotations change to be based around calendar years, which should make it easier to keep up with what’s legal.
Here’s all we know about Magic The Gathering in 2025, including the Final Fantasy and Spider-Man crossovers.
Magic The Gathering in 2025 - what’s changed?
Wizards has been releasing products at a rapid clip in recent years, and that doesn’t look set to change.
What is changing is that MTG players can now expect three original sets each year, and then three Universes Beyond collaborations.
We’ve already seen Fallout, Assassin’s Creed, Warhammer 40K, and more, and now we’ll get three additional crossovers each year.
Magic The Gathering’s 2025 roadmap
February - Aetherdrift
February will see Aetherdrift take players to a trio of as-yet-unannounced plans in the Magic multiverse as part of a racing-focused set.
Expect appearances from Chandra and Nissa, racing teams built around color combinations, and a focus on the Vehicle artifact type.
April - Tarkir Dragonstorm
We’re heading back to Tarkir in April, with players getting the chance to return after ten years - but things are a little different.
In this timeline, the dragons rule Tarkir, and the humans are rebelling against them. As a big fan of the dragon creature type, I’m particularly excited about this one. It’s unlikely, but I’d really like an Ur Dragon reprint…
June - Final Fantasy
The first Universes Beyond of 2025 brings Final Fantasy into Magic with just about everything you could want. Expect Chocobos, Behemoths, Summons, Weapons and… Sephiroth.
We get a glimpse at some of the card art in the new trailer shown at MagicCon Vegas, and that sure does look like the One-Winged Angel himself preparing to cut down… well, you know who.
As a reminder, the Final Fantasy set will include cards from every mainline entry.
August - Edge of Eternities
We didn’t get a whole host of information about Edge of Eternities, other than that it marks a trip to space for Magic players. We’ll update this as we hear more.
TBA - Spider-Man and more
Spider-Man will mark the first set from the long-term collaboration between Marvel and Wizards of the Coast (not including the Secret Lair drop at the end of 2024).
Another set is also planned for Universes Beyond, though, and the team at Wizards of the Coast is keeping that a mystery for now.
