Final Fantasy XIV is arguably one of the most popular MMORPGs on the market, going from strength to strength with each expansion. In a sign that things aren't looking to slow down any time soon, Square Enix has announced that FFXIV is expanding even further by launching on mobile devices.
Yes, beginning with A Realm Reborn, players will soon be able to embark on a brand new journey with their Warrior of Light from their handheld devices in a port developed by Lightspeed Studios under the watchful supervision of FFXIV Producer and Director Naoki Yoshida.
When Does Final Fantasy XIV Release on Mobile?
At the time of writing, Final Fantasy XIV does not yet have a release date for mobile, though playtests are expected to begin soon for players in China.
Naturally, converting an established MMO like Final Fantasy XIV to mobile takes some time, and some workarounds in order to adapt its mechanics to handheld devices. Controls will be optimized and will make use of a virtual joystick and controller inputs.
“It has been 11 years since FFXIV 2.0: A Realm Reborn launched, and this new mobile game will be a sister to FFXIV, aiming to recreate the grandeur of the original's story and combat mechanics on mobile devices,” said Yoshida. “Non-combat features, such as Disciples of the Land and Hand, will also be faithfully implemented and we look forward to growing alongside the passionate FFXIV community."
At launch, the game is expected to have nine Jobs for players to use and will likely be expanded over time. The Armoury system will also be in place, allowing players to switch Jobs at will just as they do in the main game.
