While you'll get plenty of action on the battlefield in Dragon Age: The Veilguard, your off time could include romancing one of the game's many companions. Every single decision you make could have an impact on how other companions see you, and you'll want to play towards the preferences of whoever you want to romance. If you want to know what to keep an eye out for, we've got tips to romance every companion in Dragon Age: The Veilguard.

For many players, one of the major draws of today's biggest RPGs is the ability to build a romance with another character. It's part of the secret recipe that recently delivered such success for Baldur's Gate 3, and being able to romance characters has been a staple of the Dragon Age franchise for years.

There are seven different companions you can romance in Dragon Age: The Veilguard and each of them has their own unique quests and personality quirks. We'll briefly go over some specifics on each character below, but most of the tips you need will work for every single companion in the game.

First of all, you want to choose the heart/love dialogue choice any time it becomes available. These start to broach the possibility of a relationship with each character and are a major way to boost approval. You can freely do this with multiple companions, and it's not a bad tactic as increasing their bond helps even if things remain platonic.

Check the lighthouse map any time you return to see if there's a new quest waiting with your companion, and be sure to do any side quests or outings related to them. Any time there's a quest that isn't specific to them, try to keep the companion you're pursuing in your party. Completing quests with them at your side will increase your bond. You should also watch for gifts at any merchant, as these are companion-specific and will help give you an approval boost.

If you're ever faced with a sudden decision, always take the side of your potential companion. The earliest one would be picking Neve or Harding at the ritual with Solas, but other choices could have a more drastic impact. To give a later example without spoilers, a disaster will occur in two places simultaneously. The companion you help first will gain a big approval boost, but the companion you don't choose will be extremely upset and will make winning them over for a romance much more difficult.

Sadly, there doesn't appear to be a polyamory option in Dragon Age: The Veilguard. You can only go all the way with one companion, even if you're flirting with all of them. Before launch, it was revealed that every companion in Veilguard is pansexual. While this removed a potential layer from each character's story regarding their sexuality, it does mean players can freely choose any companion regardless of their gender identity.

You'll also need to stay consistent in pursuing your potential romantic partner. If you make too many poor decisions and lower someone's approval, it'll be too late should they begin a romance with another companion. Picking a companion early will give you the best chance of romancing them, but if you stay on everyone's good side you could still have another option should your first pick land with someone else.

For those who have already chosen their potential partner, we'll go over some details that might give you an advantage. If you were already drawn to a character before beginning Veilguard or start a new game, it helps to choose a race, class, or faction that aligns with that companion. You can see each character's details below:

  • Harding: Rogue, Dwarf, No Faction
  • Bellara: Mage, Elf, Veil Jumpers
  • Neve: Mage, Human, Shadow Dragons
  • Lucanis: Rogue, Human, Antivan Crows
  • Davrin: Warrior, Elf, Grey Wardens
  • Taash: Warrior, Qunari, Lords of Fortune
  • Emmrich: Mage, Human, Mourn Watch

You'll still have plenty of opportunity if your character doesn't match up in these categories, but it may help if you were frustrated by missing out on one of them on your first playthrough. Follow the best practices of any classic relationship. Spend as much time with them as possible and always take their side. Before long, you'll have one Dragon Age: The Veilguard companion fixated on your every romantic word.
