This should give you an easy reference if you ever need to check any Dragon Age: The Veilguard controls without digging through in-game menus, and some may seem unnecessary early on but will be crucial as combat become smore challenging. Most of all, you'll want to work on your Defend timing.
Most of the standard or easier combat settings will automatically have the Threat Indicator turned on, and you can use this as a visual aid to know when it might be time to Press LB or L1. If they aren't turned on or you need to make any other adjustments, open the pause menu and go to gameplay in settings. You can choose a new combat preset at any time during a save, and you can use Advanced Combat Settings to custommize different aspects of that challenge and turn on the Threat Indicator if it's disabled.
While getting the timing right for a Perfect Defend or Parry is great, sometimes it'll be better to Dodge. Just be cognizant of your surroundings. If you're in a tight space or near a ledge, it's very easy to dodge your way off the edge and plummet to your death. You can also lower the challenge for gameplay, but try not to do so early on. Wait until you've got a better feel for different Dragon Age: The Veilguard combat encounters and how well you can hold your own.
