In any good cop media, the moral dilemma of bribery and the ramifications of taking a fat cheque in exchange for information or less legal promises is often featured, including in Disco Elysium, where Union boss Evrart Claire will test your allegiances. Whether you take the novelty cheque from him or not will send a message to both the Union and the people of Martinaise on what kind of cop you are, whether straight-laced or easily swayed by Real.
In this guide, we’ll run you through how either taking or refusing the Union’s Novelty Cheque will affect your experience as a member of the RCM and where you need to go to cash that baby in.

Should You Take the Cheque from Evrart Claire?
Depending on when you reach Evrart Claire in his harbor office and sit down to interview him, the value of the 25 Real novelty cheque he’s offering can change wildly. If you find yourself hard for cash early on, it’s certainly very tempting - especially if you’re struggling to pay your damages and secure a place to sleep on Day 1.
Obviously, there’ll be a knock-on effect whether you do or you don’t take the cheque, which can shape your social standing among less Union-inclined groups in Martinaise and the difficulty of a quick-to-follow skill check, one of which could figuratively shoot you in the foot if you’re not careful.
What Happens If You Take the Union Bribe?
You’re already on the backfoot while forced to sit in an uncomfortable, quite literally Health-damaging chair, so accepting monetary help from the Union could be dangerous:
-
Taking the bribe from Evrart Claire will place you directly in the palm of his hands and whether you sympathize with the Union or not, this will land you in hot water for a tough skill check.
-
After accepting the bribe, Claire will immediately move on to the topic of your missing gun, during which you’ll need to survive a red Composure 12 check to avoid taking Morale damage.
If you think you’re going to fail, be sure to bring some Magnesium or Hypnogamma to help survive the shame and embarrassment of losing your gun whilst sitting in a very sore chair.
How to Cash the Novelty Cheque in Disco Elysium
Morals and professionalism aside, if you chose to take the cheque and want to put it towards your room and board at the Whirling-in-Rags, you’ll find out soon enough that Garte won’t accept it and will demand that you bring him real money. Thankfully, you can exchange it pretty easily nearby.
Bring the Cheque to the Frittte Kiosk
To cash in the oversized novelty cheque, head over to the Frittte kiosk, just in front of the harbor gates, and speak to the teen clerk. Upon exchange, you’ll receive a flat 25 Real into your pockets to do with as you please. It may or may not be enough to help cover the damages with Garte, so make sure you’ve got other, easy sources of income ready.
