In typical Disco Elysium fashion, your moral compass will be tested wholly as you consider taking the fancy, ceramic armor boots from your murder victim’s corpse. While initially a very selfish and immoral idea, there are still a few benefits to sneakily swiping those boots for yourself, as well as being part of the game’s long scavenger hunt ‘Find All Armour Pieces’ quest. Now, getting the body down is tough enough as it is, but you’ll need to be extra careful if you don’t want the boots lost to proper investigative autopsy processing.
In this guide, we’ll be covering whether it’s even worth getting your hands on a dead man’s shoes. We’ll also touch on the skills they’ll give you when equipped and how to go about removing them from the Hanged Man in the first place.
Is Getting the Hanged Man’s Boots Worth It?
If you’re a completionist and looking to acquire the full set of ceramic power armor for the associated achievement, then it’s a worthy cause to pursue exploring Martinaise for each piece. On top of that, each piece of the set will provide certain buffs and debuffs to skills, which can prove useful in a pinch.
The T-500 greaves that you’ll need to pry from a dead man will provide the following skill adjustments:
-
+2 Authority - ‘Put your foot down’
-
-1 Composure - ‘Shoes too big to fill’
While not the best thing to wear during moments like the Composure challenging interview with Evrart Claire, you’ll certainly find some use for these boots when proving your authority to Titus Hardie to advance your investigation.
How to Remove the T-500 Fairweather Greaves
Moral quandary aside, if you’re keen on acquiring the Hanged Man’s boots, you'll need to avoid something much more upsetting: disappointing Kim Kitsuragi. Once you’ve got the body down, the autopsy will begin soon after, during which you can begin the process of removing the boots:
-
While autopsying the body, there’ll be an option to try to pull the boots off, attempt this.
-
Kim will stop you, after which you can finish the field autopsy. Do not tell Kim to take the body away for processing.
-
Wait until 21:00 or later, and enter your room to trigger Kim heading to bed himself.
-
Exit your room and head back out to the body alone.
-
Choose the ‘pull and twist’ technique when removing the boots.
Score. One pair of rotting flesh-ridden ceramic armoured boots, all for you. Obviously, we can’t go wearing these as they are, so you’ll need to find somewhere to clean the boots.
How to Wash the Boots
These boots need a good seeing-to, but a regular tumble wash or rinse in the sink isn’t going to do the trick. You’ll need to find a good place to wash the boots, which is thankfully nearby:
-
With the boots in your inventory, head inside the Whirling-in-Rags.
-
Go behind the bar into the hostel’s kitchen, where a large pot will be on the gas stove, and interact with it.
-
Check out the cookware and cleaning supplies, then choose the soap and vinegar option to boil the boots with.
Are There Any Consequences for Taking the Boots?
Once you’ve boiled the boots, a fresh, less flesh-smelling pair of T-500 Fairweather greaves will now be in your inventory. Oh, and don’t worry about upsetting Kim, apparently threatening to steal them and then subsequently appearing the next day wearing new boots isn’t enough to concern him, or maybe he’s just turning the other cheek.
