Will Diablo 4 Have Set Items? Release Date Speculation

Lilith returns to Sanctuary with Diablo 4, but will Set items, those glorious green pieces of loot, return with the Mother of Sanctuary, or will Diablo 4's Set items release sometime in the future?

This article explains the availability of Set items in Diablo 4, and speculate on when these green Rarity loot type might make it into the latest title in the iconic ARPG franchise, so let's jump right in.

Update on 18 July 2023: We've updated this article with the latest information on Set items in Diablo 4. We can confirm that Set Items are not releasing with Diablo 4 Season 1.

Does Diablo 4 Have Set Items?

Yes, Diablo 4 will have Set items but not right away. To make it completely clear, Diablo 4 does not have set items at launch.

In Diablo 2 and Diablo 3, Set items are the endgame goal, and the best builds are generally based around them. Six pieces per set leaves little room for more diverse builds, after all. While it feels great to see that Green text from an item drop for the first time, maybe, just maybe, it is good that Diablo 4 won't have set items at launch.

With that in mind, the Game Director of Diablo 4, Joe Shely, in a developer livestream update, confirmed that Set items would not be in Diablo 4 at launch but also confirmed they will release in the future. Joe Shely said:

As we've been building the game, we felt like we could evolve sets in a new way relative to what we've seen in Diablo 3. But, we needed some more time to get them into the game in a way that would work well with the rest of Diablo 4, so you won't see sets at launch in the game. We think sets are cool, and we want to do them right – so that's something we're looking at for our live service.

Diablo 4 Set Items: Release Date Speculation

So when will Set items release in Diablo 4? Well, we have an idea that it could be towards the tail end of 2023. Keep in mind that this is pure speculation, but we will update this section once official information becomes available.

Diablo 4 release on 6 June, and we know it will be "a few weeks" before Season 1 kicks off. Set items will more than likely not be released with the first Ladder Season. We also know that Diablo 4 Seasons will run for roughly three (3) months. 

Diablo 4 Season 1 begins starts in mid-July 2023. Then, Season 2 should kick off in mid-October 2023. Set items could release in Season 2, or maybe Season 3, depending on how the developer believes the gearing metasystem is working. Therefore, our best guestimate is a Diablo 4 Set item release date window of either October 2023 or December 2023. 

We will endeavor to update this article consistently with any new information regarding Set items in Diablo 4, when these rare, green pieces of loot could release, and details on specific Set bonuses for each class.
