Ubisoft has just revealed the next big expansion pack for Assassin's Creed Valhalla, called Dawn of Ragnarök.
Dawn of Ragnarök is described as "the most ambitious expansion in franchise's history" and in its scope, it's closer to a more traditional expansion pack (a big new story, almost like a brand new game) than to a typical modern DLC of a smaller scale.
Dawn of Ragnarök will further deviate from a standard Assassin's Creed formula, and it will fully embrace fantasy and RPG elements.
Let's check out everything we currently know about the expansion.
Is Dawn of Ragnarök a standalone game?
Dawn of Ragnarök is a massive, 35-hour long expansion for Assassin's Creed Valhalla which will have players explore all-new regions and new stories, utilising a slew of new gameplay mechanics.
While incredibly massive, Dawn of Ragnarök is not a standalone expansion, rather a downloadable DLC content for those who own the original game.
Dawn of Ragnarök story
In Dawn of Ragnarök, we will descent further into Norse mythology, and this time around Ubisoft is not shy of embracing the fantasy elements in their full scale. This expansion has no roots in history, rather it's revolving around the stories of the Nordics folklore, legends, and mythology.
"Faced with visions of a new threat, Eivor must embrace their destiny as Odin and enter the mythical dwarven realm of Svartalfheim, a beautiful but hostile world under invasion," says the expansion's official page."From underground forges to soaring golden peaks, immerse yourself in a vast, perilous new world."
Assassin's Creed Valhalla's Year 2 content is fleshing out Havi's story, the Isu that reincarnates as Eivor, unravelling more details about their back story, starting with Dawn of Ragnarök, where you will embark on a "desperate quest" to rescue your son, Baldr, who has been imprisoned by "an unspeakable foe."
That "unspeakable foe" is Surtr, a seemingly unkillable fire giant and his armies of ice and fire, including Jotnars, foes of ice from Jotunheim, and Muspels, enemies of fire from Muspelheim.
Dawn of Ragnarök gameplay
At the time of writing, Ubisoft hasn't yet revealed many details about the gameplay, but we know that we will be using a set of completely new powers, new weapons and armours, new features and more.
For example, we will be able to turn ourselves into molten lava that will protect us and inflict damage in combat. We can also shapeshift into Raven to scout and dive into unsuspecting enemies from above to assassinate them.
We will also be able to absorb powers directly from our defeated foes, or even resurrect them to fight by our side. It's not all about combat, there's some diplomacy here as well, as we will be able to make alliances with dwarven kingdoms against our common enemies.
