Cross-platform play support is becoming a common practice in gaming as a way for players across multiple gaming platforms to play together online. Will FromSoftware be adding crossplay support to Elden Ring? As of writing, it’s strictly speculative as we have yet to receive confirmation from the developers on the inclusion of crossplay support.
Regardless, we explore what we know so far about possible cross-platform play support in the upcoming Elden Ring.
Elden Ring crossplay support
According to the blog post on Bandai Namco’s website, the Closed Network Test includes crossplay support through its multiplayer components. However, the accompanying statement does provide some limitations.
“The game will allow for cross-play multiplayer (PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 players will be able to play together, same for Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One. PlayStation players will not be able to play with Xbox players).”
Generally, crossplay support allows players to play with each other, irrespective of the platform or console generation. This sounds like the game supports cross-generational (cross-gen) play, rather than cross-platform play.
As to whether crossplay will be supported at launch is looking less likely for the time being. But based on the information provided for the Closed Network Test, it does seem that cross-gen support will be included.
Elden Ring cross-save support
If crossplay support won’t be included with Elden Ring at launch, it may be possible that cross-save support won’t be featured. Even so, there is still plenty of time left until the game’s February release for the developers to revise these game features.
Similarly, the results from the networking test could potentially see several changes being made to the game ahead of its launch. Whether they will include full crossplay and cross-save support remains to be announced.
Elden Ring cross-progression support
The developers have stated in their Closed Network Test FAQ support page that all game data from the networking test will not be transferable. As such, any progress made will be reset once the test has concluded.
As for whether this feature will be made available at launch is yet to be determined. We will endeavour to update this story when more information becomes available.
