We explain how you can add sockets to items in Diablo 4, how to unsocket gems, and the max socket cap per item type.
Diablo 4 Add Sockets & Max Socket Per Item Type

Have you found a powerful item in Diablo 4, but you have no idea how to add sockets? Or maybe, you accidentally added the wrong gem and want to unsocket it. Don't worry, Nephalem; we've got you covered.

This guide explains how you can add sockets to items in Diablo 4, unsocket unwanted gems, and even outlines the max sockets per item type cap.

How To Add Sockets To Items in Diablo 4

The first thing you will need to do, and probably have done already is unlock the Jeweler in Diablo 4 and then head to one of the game's main towns to get started.

Select the item to which you want to add a socket, and have the required resources ready. That might be a bit difficult for some, especially on lower levels, as adding a socket to an item in Diablo 4 requires one (1) Scattered Prism.

Check out our guide to farming Scattered Prisms in Diablo 4. Spoiler: You must get lucky with Treasure Goblins or slay World Bosses. Once the farming is complete, select the item, and pay with a Scattered Prism alongside a relatively minor Gold cost.

You won't see items with three sockets in Diablo 4, not yet, anyway. Each item type has a specific max socket cap, which you can view below.

  • Head - 1 Socket
  • Chest - 2 Sockets
  • Pants - 2 Sockets
  • Amulet - 1 Socket
  • Ring - 1 Socket
  • 1-Handed Weapon - 1 Socket
  • 2-Handed Weapon - 2 Sockets
  • Bow - 2 Sockets
  • Focus - 1 Socket
  • Wand - 1 Socket
  • Shield - 1 Socket

With a very limited number of sockets available per item type, you might want to unsocket an unwanted or less powerful gem, which is what the next section of this guide explains.

How To Unsocket a Gem in Diablo 4

Unsocketing a gem in Diablo 4 is quite easy and doesn't require a special resource, but it will consume a bit of your Gold. Head to a Jeweler NPC and select the "Unsocket" tab, then add the item from which you want to remove an unwanted gem. Then pay a bit of Gold, and it is done.

Note that the Gold cost to unsocket is based on the item level.
