If you love mechs and you think that they are underrepresented in video games, then you will love The Riftbreaker.
Developed by EXOR Studios, The Riftbreaker is a culmination of almost 15 years of experience the studio has garnered since its founding in 2007.
Known for games like X-Morph: Defense and Zombie Driver, top-down titles beloved by both gamers and critics, now they are bringing us their most ambitious game yet - The Riftbreaker.
What exactly is The Riftbreaker? Let's find out!
What is The Riftbreaker?
The Riftbreaker mixes several strategy genres into a compelling, and unique, blend.
The main portion of the game is about base-building similar to traditional RTS games but also games like Factorio.
Then, you have tower defence elements, as you will need to defend your base against increasingly larger waves of enemies which are threatening to swarm your base if you don't prepare your defences correctly.
Finally, you also have action-RPG elements, as your main protagonist will jump into action as well, boasting powerful weapons and abilities that can single-handedly decimate enemy troops.
But that's not all, as there are also traces of survival games, exploration, and more!
The Riftbreaker story
In The Riftbreaker we play as captain Ashley S. Nowak or the titular Riftbreaker. She is described as an elite scientist and commando, and she operates an immensely powerful Mecha-Suit which is your main gameplay unit and everything you do starts from there.
Players are sent on a one-way mission to a mysterious world called Galatea 37, a habitable planet in the distant part of the galaxy. The goal of the mission is to build a base and set up things for the future colonisation of the planet by humanity. Ultimately, you need to create a two-way rift back to Earth, which is the main goal of the game's campaign.
The Riftbreaker gameplay
The Riftbreaker is a top-down strategy game, and you control the Mecha-Suit which acts as the main construction unit for your base, but also as a powerful "hero" unit.
The main goal of base-building is to develop your industry for resource gathering, but you will also need to construct walls, barriers and defence towers to protect yourself from attackers.
Each mission during the campaign has its unique goals and is set in different biomes of Galatea 37, and you will need to adapt your strategy based on your goals and conditions of the environment.
You will use your Mech for exploring terrain that hides many secrets and extra resources. The Mech will also be your strongest defence as it comes with numerous weapons and abilities which can be unlocked and upgraded, like a Mini Nuke launcher, Gravity Grenades, and Flame Thrower.
