Diablo 3 Darkening of Tristram 2021 event: Release date, time, content and rewards

On 3rd January 1997, Blizzard Entertainment released the original Diablo, an iconic ARPG which will never be forgotten. Since 2016, Blizzard has released The Darkening of Tristram event in Diablo 3 to celebrate the anniversary of the original game.

The Darkening of Tristram event for 2021 in Diablo 3 will once again take players back to the legendary town of Tristram. Here's everything we know so far about the event, including the release date, time, expected content and rewards.

The Darkening of Tristram 2021 release date & time

On 31st December, cultists will start to appear in Diablo 3 at 23:59 GMT. Players will be able to hunt down these cultists in Adventure Mode, discovering clues which lead to a portal into the town of Tristram's past.

On 3rd January 2021, the portal will open, transporting players back to the original Tristram, with retro graphics and a whole lot of content to discover.

The Darkening of Tristram 2021 content

There's a whole lot of content to dive into in The Darkening of Tristram event for 2021. It appears the content will be mostly the same as last year since Blizzard Entertainment didn't mention anything really new in their official announcement.

First up, once you've hunted down the cultists and entered the portal, you will be transported to the original Tristram, combined with a grainy, pixelated filter to recreate the visuals of the 1997 classic.

Players will be able to explore the iconic Cathedral, diving into the depths to face enemies such as The Butcher, and even the Lord of Terror, Diablo himself. 

Expect the classic music, sounds, and undead or demonic enemies within, alongside a tonne of new loot to discover.

The Darkening of Tristram 2021 event rewards

While there will be shiny new loot to obtain, there will also be activities which need completing during The Darkening of Tristram 2021 event in Diablo 3. 

Players will be able to earn the following rewards:

• Transmogrification effects
• Portraits
• Banners
• Pets

While some rewards will be easy to find during The Darkening of Tristram 2021 event in Diablo 3, others will require you to search "every nook or unlocking every achievement" before you can get your hands on them.

At the time of writing, Blizzard Entertainment has not revealed the achievement list for The Darkening of Tristram 2021 event.
