Riot has announced a major update to the Riot ID username change policy as starting from November 20, Riot ID will replace Summoner Names. In addition to this, players will be able to change their Riot ID name only once every 365 days, and if you want to do it more than once, you will have to pay a fee for it.
In order to do it, you will have to pay the equivalent of approximately $10 in in-game currency on the accounts page. In the beginning, you will be able to change your Riot ID using only Riot Points and Legends of Runeterra Coins. However, other in-game currencies like VALORANT Points, Wild Rift Cores, and TFT Coins will also be available in the future.
Riot has announced that they are implementing these changes to give more weight to a user's in-game identification and to track friends in an easier way across multiple titles. Apart from this, "the ability to change your name for free every 30 days just isn’t something we can do from a technical and business perspective," Riot reveals in the official blog post.
To make the transition smoother, Riot will be giving a couple more free name changes in the coming months and will announce officially once the name change resets will happen.
