PlayStation’s sci-fi multiplayer first-person shooter Concord has revealed it's first gameplay footage along with a 2024 release date.
Fans intrigued by this 5v5 team-based shooter won't have to wait long to get their hands on the game, which launches on PS5 and PC on August 23, following a beta set to take place this July.
The reveal started with an in-engine CGI trailer introducing us to some of the main characters, known as 'freerunners' and there's a touch of the Overeatch and Apex Legends when it comes to the roster of characters on show.
According to the full reveal, the plan from the studio is to reveal cinematic vignettes every week, so players can learn more about its characters. Which sounds like a good idea given it seemed to take Blizzard (ironically) an ice age to do the same with it's roster of characters.
However, it's likely going to be the gameplay that will ultimately decide on the staying power of this live-service shooter. For now Firewalk Studio's is keen to stress that six different online 5v5 PVP modes "across a variety of exotic and fantastical maps that span the different planets of the ever-expanding Concord Galaxy". But personally, it felt as though it was largely cobbled together from elements of shooters I've seen before. A bit of Apex, Overwatch, and even a smattering of Destiny's crucible.
Over on the PlayStation Blog, Game Director Ryan Ellis emphasised that the game had been inspired by some of the teams favorite fighting and strategy games.
"All of these abilities and mechanics come together to create a unique asymmetry to the characters and opportunities for improvisation that make every fight and every match-up a chance for something different and unexpected to happen."
For now, we'll reserve judgement until we've seen and played a bit more of the game when that beta drops in July.
