It looks like Activision and Infinity Ward plan on keeping around Call of Duty: Warzone for a long time.
As soon as the next-gen consoles launch, which is expected to happen in "holiday 2020", Call of Duty: Warzone will support them.
Warzone PS5 and Xbox Series X support
If you are planning to get an Xbox Series X or PS5 at launch, and you happen to love the popular free-to-play Warzone, then you will be able to experience it on the next-gen console of your choice.
This news comes from Infinity Ward's Narrative Director, Taylor Kurosaki, who spoke to GamerGen in an interview.
When asked if there will be new versions of Call of Duty: Warzone and Modern Warfare, or if it will only be backwards compatible for the PS5 and Xbox Series X, Mr Kurosaki explained:
"I know that our plan is Warzone is going to be around for quite some time, so as soon as those new systems are out and available I’m sure we’ll support them."
We all know the Call of Duty franchise, and how it has multiple sub-franchises, such as Black Ops, Modern Warfare, and World War. Call of Duty: Warzone, however, will be the one constant going forward.
Activision plans to integrate the different sub-franchises into Warzone going forward. Mr Kurosaki explains:
"We’re in kind of uncharted territories here. Call of Duty has been on a very regular cadence for many many years, and Warzone has made us rethink exactly how best to release new content and how to integrate it. Call of Duty is a genre in itself, there are different branches in the Call of Duty tree, but they’re all connected in some ways. Warzone will be the through line that connects all of the different various sub-franchises of Call of Duty. It’s going to be really cool to see how the different sub-franchises sort of come in and out of focus, but Warzone will be the one constant."
With Season 3 of Warzone now underway, and Season 4 likely to release sometime in the next month, it is an exciting time for players. It remains to be seen if there will be a Warzone Season 5 before next-gen consoles release, but it is great to know Warzone will be sticking around for a very long time.
