Battlefield 2042 developers DICE has confirmed that the game will launch with full cross-play support, as well as with the cross-platform progression system.
With a game as big as Battlefield 2042, which will feature enormous maps with battlefields designed for 128 players and an immersive All-Out Warfare experience, it comes only natural that the game will have crossplay support.
Battlefield 2042 crossplay support
As each battle will require 128 players to start the game(albeit bots will replace missing players), having crossplay enabled will allow to find matches much faster and much more efficiently.
"We are still building cross-play functionality, and the first opportunity for us to test it with a wider, invite-only group will be within the Technical Playtest," Dice explains.
Players on both PC and consoles will be able to opt-out of crossplay if they wish so, for example, if you don't wish to play against a mouse/keyboard player while you are playing on your Xbox Series X with a controller.
As it stands, the functionality is still in the testing phase, and both EA and DICE want to make sure that everything is working perfectly before fully enabling it.
They are targeting for crossplay to be enabled alongside the game's release on 22nd October, but if the feature still isn't ready at that point, crossplay will be delayed.
As an exception, crossplay will not be enabled between the old and new-gen of consoles, instead, it will be split as follows:
- PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5
- Xbox One and PlayStation 4 systems
This is because, Xbox One and PS4 will have their own unique "old-gen" version of the game, with small differences in a map design, and that can only support 64 players.
In addition, cross-progression and cross-commerce are also confirmed for Battlefield 2042, which means that everything you have on your account will always stay with you, no matter where did you achieve something or where did you make a purchase.
For example, if you have played the game only on PC and then you buy the PS5 version of the game at some point, once you log in with your account on the PS5, all your progress, achievements, unlocks, and purchases from PC will be there, and same goes for Xbox, in all directions.
Battlefield 2042 is slated for release on 22nd October 2021, and it is coming to Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PC.
