The Shastasaurus is a new addition to ARK: Survival Ascended, debuting on The Center map. This massive creature boasts unique support and tactical abilities when outfitted with its special saddle, and it also has an offensive capability in the form of torpedoes.

Unfortunately, the game doesn’t provide much information on how the torpedoes work, what kind of ammo they need, or their damage output. Luckily, this guide covers everything you need to know about the Shastasaurus’s torpedo ability in ARK: Survival Ascended The Center.

The Shastasaurus, equipped with its special saddle, provides some of the most useful abilities for underwater navigation and combat in ARK: Survival Ascended. While we covered most of its capabilities in our Shastasaurus abilities guide, one standout feature is its ability to fire torpedoes. The first thing to note is that the torpedoes require Rocket Propelled Grenades as ammunition and can only be fired when these are present in the Shastasaurus’s inventory.

To fire the torpedoes, head inside the submarine attached to the Shastasaurus and, once mounted, switch to the first-person view from the submarine. From here, simply right-click to fire the torpedoes. These torpedoes deal substantial damage, ranging from over 6000 to thatch and wood, around 1800 to metal, and 400 to TEK structures, as well as causing splash damage to nearby structures.

This makes the Shastasaurus an excellent tame for attacking underwater bases in PvP or dealing with wild sea creatures in PvE. What makes it even better is that, unlike the Rocket Launcher, which loses durability over time and eventually breaks, the Shastasaurus’s torpedo launcher is permanently available and won’t stop working until the Shastasaurus is killed.

While torpedoes are great for damaging stationary structures, they struggle to hit moving targets. Keep this in mind and use a mix of the Shastasaurus's abilities to stay alive in tough spots. (Picture: Shane / Studio Wildcard)

However, there are some drawbacks. The aiming of the torpedoes is quite linear and once fired, they travel in a straight trajectory. This means that if a target swims out of the way, they can easily avoid the torpedoes. Therefore, make sure your shots count when aiming at enemies.

Despite this, torpedoes are a powerful and extremely useful piece of underwater offensive weaponry. It's well worth stocking up on a few for the next time you take your Shastasaurus out to sea on ARK: Survival Ascended The Center.
