Amazon has officially ordered a new television adaptation of the popular action-adventure series Tomb Raider for its streaming offering, Amazon Prime Video. The new Tomb Raider project is part of a broad collaboration between Amazon and developer Crystal Dynamics, and this pairing has envisioned plans for another film and new gaming release in the future.

The Tomb Raider TV series for Amazon will also involve Legendary Television, as the studio has the rights to the Tomb Raider IP and is producing a Tomb Raider anime for Netflix. The series will be executive produced and written by Fleabag creator and star Phoebe Waller-Bridge.

The news of the television adaptation of the Tomb Raider franchise was confirmed by Head of Amazon & MGM Studios Jen Salke during the Upfront event on 14th May 2024. The event saw Amazon announcing a slew of new projects, including the Road House sequel, Spider-Man Noir, and the aforementioned Tomb Raider series.

Deadline first reported on the series, which Waller-Bridge will handle, in January 2023, adding that she may be tapped to work on the film adaptation, too. According to Waller-Bridge, "If I could tell my teenage self this was happening, I think she'd explode."

Tomb Raider has been a huge part of my life, and I feel incredibly privileged to be bringing it to television with such passionate collaborators. Lara Croft means a lot to me, as she does to many, and I can't wait to go on this adventure. Bats' n all.

No casting announcements were made during Amazon's Upfront presentation, as a timeline of when production will start has yet to be confirmed. As for the Tomb Raider anime series, it has yet to confirm its premiere date for which it will be available to stream on Netflix.
