Top 10 best Nintendo Switch games of all time

Top 10 best Nintendo Switch games of all time

Having taken a look at both the top 10 Xbox One games and the top 10 PS4 games of all time, it's time we take a look at Nintendo's most recent offering with the Nintendo Switch.

Nintendo have always been somewhat separate from Xbox and PlayStation – where these two always sought to beat each other, Nintendo was more than comfortable in its own lane. And the Switch itself has performed brilliantly both critically and commercially, bringing a new generation of games and gamers to life.

But what are the top 10 Nintendo Switch games? We look to Metacritic to find out.

10. INSIDE [91]

The first of only three games to appear in this list and also feature in one of the other two, INSIDE was ranked Xbox's sixth best title. The game comes from Limbo developer PLAYDEAD, with the focal narrative being centred around a young boy mysteriously finding himself involved in a dark project. It's a short story but is aesthetically pleasing and the narrative is brilliant.

9. SteamWorld Heist: Ultimate Edition [91]

SteamWorld Heist: Ultimate Edition follows Captain Piper Faraday, smuggler and occasional pirate, as she recruits a team of steam-driven robots and sets out on a daring adventure.

The game originally released on Nintendo 3DS in 2015, shortly followed by PC and PS4, but it really comes to life with the Ultimate Edition on Switch, refining an already fantastic game.

8. Sonic Mania Plus [91]

Sonic Mania Plus is the enhanced, next-gen version of the original Sonic Mania mobile game. It has the nostalgic 2D graphics that takes you back to your Sega Megadrive days, but in 60FPS and graphically enhanced.

It's all you could want in a Sonic the Hedgehog game, which is why it ranks so highly.

7. Celeste [92]

Celeste is also ranked at number four in Xbox's best games, and you can see why. As said in that article:

"It received universal acclaim from critics when it released in January 2018, a well-designed platformer that constantly challenges the player and doesn’t offer any hand-holding or spoon-feeding along the way. It’s like an 8-bit Dark Souls. Maybe."

6. Bayonetta 2 [92]

If you enjoyed the first Bayonetta game, you pretty much know what you're getting except the sequel is far better and more refined than its predecessor.

The combat is perhaps the highlight of this game, a strong narrative supported by fights that feel natural and fun.

5. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe [92]

Mario Kart

Mario Kart is perhaps one of the most celebrated series' in gaming, tracing back decades and always being guaranteed fun.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is the definitive version of Mario Kart 8, with every possible character, kart and track available. It's got everything you could want from a Mario Kart game (literally) and more, hence making it one of the best Nintendo Switch games of all time.

4. Undertale [93]

Undertale ranks as the 10th best PS4 game of all time, but clocks in at number four in the Switch rankings. The game also received a 7.6 user rating – the lowest in this list – but the RPG is undoubtedly a well-made and brilliantly-presented game.

3. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate [93]

Smash Ultimate

Perhaps one of the most highly anticipated games to hit the Nintendo Switch, the Smash series is adored by Nintendo fans and Super Smash Bros. Melee is an esport that feels like it has been and will continue to be around forever.

That's why its no surprise to see Smash Ultimate so high on this list, as it brings players the largest roster ever seen in a Smash game, as well as everyone's favourite arenas and nearly 20 years of Smash into one title.

2. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild [97]

Zelda-BOTW-Switch.jpg

Zelda only ends up in second place because it has a slightly lower user rating (8.5) to the number 1 game (90), but to call this game anything other than a masterpiece is simply wrong.

Discover what has become of Hyrule, now ruined and a sore sight in comparison to what it once was, in what is arguably the most complete Zelda story ever created, with more than enough gameplay to sink your teeth into.

1. Super Mario Odyssey [97]

Only just edging out Zelda: Breath of the Wild thanks to its user rating, Super Mario Odyssey is the greatest game available on the Nintendo Switch.

This game is pretty different to any other Mario game you've played before, but still holds onto that feeling of a pure, nostalgic, fantastic Super Mario game. It more closely resembles games like Super Mario Sunshine or Super Mario Galaxy but with all the charm that the Super Mario series has held onto for the past thirty years.
