Blizzard Announce Starcraft Remastered

One of the pioneer titles of the esports industry is getting a face lift, as Blizzard president Mike Morhaime announced a remastered version of the original Starcraft, and it’s most famous expansion, Brood War.

The updated version will have updated graphics and audio, while also becoming available on Blizzard’s game platform ‘Battle.net’ for the first time. This will allow players to launch the game from this client, and use the matchmaking service that should make it less daunting for newer players enjoying the classic game for the first time.

Morhaime stated at the ‘I <3 Starcraft’ event that the company would not be making any gameplay changes, simply updating the aesthetic of the game. Older players will be able to remain on the original version, as the two will be compatible in terms of balance and online play. The Starcraft community has a history of preferring the older version of the game, but a remade version might breath more life into the franchise, whilst also drawing in a new audience.

Starcraft Remastered is expected to be released later this year. No price has been announced yet, however with only the visuals being updated, along with some campaign cutscenes, it’s not expected to be that high.

The esports scene surrounding Starcraft has already seen a shift back to Brood War, though the major tournaments still remain in the realms of Starcraft 2. Brood War tournaments have featured the likes of Lee “Flash” Young Ho, and Lee “Jaedong” Jae Dong, two of the most celebrated players of all time. A remastered Brood War may bring more interest, more tournaments, and more funding into the esports scene, which lay the foundation for Starcraft’s domination in South Korea many years ago.
