FirstBlood to Host PUBG Invitational

FirstBlood is set to host its first PUBG invitational, which will take place on February 17th and be streamed on FirstBlood’s Twitch channel. Invited teams, including Cloud9, eUnited and Noble, will compete for $1000 worth of physical prizes.

For those unfamiliar with FirstBlood: it is a decentralised esports betting platform based on the cryptocurrency Etherium. Theoretically, this use of blockchain technology allows players to bet on games in a much more efficient fashion than conventional currencies would allow. The app syncs up to your Steam and lets you wager cryptocurrency-backed tokens on the outcome of a game, with the winner taking the spoils. GINX writer Damian Alonzo did a great job explaining what FirstBlood is all about in his article for PC Gamer.

Currently, the platform is limited to Dota 2, with support for ladders and tournaments in that game only. The announcement of this invitational seems to indicate that FirstBlood have their sights set on the wider esports landscape – and PUBG, with its ridiculous popularity and burgeoning esports scene, is as good a place to start as any.

“We are extremely excited and proud to be hosting the FirstBlood PUBG Invitational,” said FirstBlood CEO Joe Zhou. “PUBG, a game we at FirstBlood constantly talk about, and one you’ll all too often find being played internally at our Boston HQ, has exploded. We couldn’t wait to extend our previous success in hosting Dota 2 events to PUBG. In BITS America’s, we saw Dota 2 star, BSJ (BananaSlamJamma) formerly of Team Leviathan take home the title against Team Sacred in an epic best of five series. We look forward to seeing exciting plays by the very best while bringing together an ever growing community in PUBG. We also hope to be able to work with Bluehole to offer cash prizes for future events.”
