How to Win at PUBG: Our Top Tips

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is all the rage right now. Triumphantly rising to the top of the Battle Royale genre, PUBG has gone from strength to strength, and even seems to be making a splash in world of esports. Much of this interest has stemmed from the game’s difficulty – many players have struggled to claim even one “Chicken Dinner” (that’s a first place finish, for the uninitiated). With that in mind, we’ve put together a helpful guide on exactly how to win at PUBG. These 5 tips will help you up your game in no time at all.

Smart start

The interesting thing about PUBG is how your starting point is really up to you, so you’ve gotta make sure it the best it can be. There are a number of strategies that players like to utilise here, but some are more effective than others.

It’s important to consider a number of factors when selecting your starting location. The choice is between a challenging beginning location with a higher opportunity for loot, or an easier place that has less risk but will ultimately put you on the backfoot in the loot department.

Starting out, you’ll probably want to look to begin in less densely built areas. It’ll give you less contested loot and give you a bit of freedom to practice with the mechanics and systems, but don’t forget that shrinking safe zone.

Some will recommend starting from the edges and working your way inwards, but this can put you at a serious disadvantage if the point begins too far away. Landing closer to the middle with higher ground will be important for long-term survival, and when you’re a little better you should consider landing in more built up areas.

Balancing act

For a number of reasons, surviving a Battle Royale really requires as much management as it does marksmanship.

Key among them is inventory management, because there’s only so many types of rifle sights you need. This, again, will be a learning curve, but try not to keep too much clutter. When it comes to the crunch (i.e. top 20/10) then you’re going to want to be able to access exactly the things you need exactly when you need them; there’s a lot of pressure in these moments, and rifling through junk will only hinder you.

But then it’s also important to ensure your health has a good balance, too. Don’t heal up every slight piece of damage, but nor should you wander the hills when you’re feeling safe with a slither of health just to conserve your bandages.

It might be nice to keep onto some healing options, but it’s no good if a lucky shot from a hidden attacker is all that was needed to finally finish you off.

No-hands drive-by

If you’ve grabbed yourself a vehicle then you’re already at an advantage since it’ll get you around the map quickly and with a greater degree of safety (though you’re not invincible in this, remember).

But if you’re solo or you team-mates have been crushed already, then that doesn’t mean you can’t perform a drive-by yourself. Press Ctri + 1-4 to pick one of the car’s unoccupied seats, you’ll switch to it and give you the freedom to poke out your gun and blast any would-be attackers.

The idea is to do this while the car is still moving, of course, using the momentum to propel you forward (ideally on a road) while you take aim from the passenger’s seat.

Another point to remember about vehicles is that they will make sounds, and smart players keep their PC’s speakers turned up so there’s no chance of missing such telltale signs. How you deal with this information is up to you, but don’t think a berserk charge into battle is going to work out as well as you might think.

Be quick

How to win at pubg

While the element of surprise is always going to win out in PUBG, that’s not quite what we’re talking about here. In all avenues of the game you need to be quick: loot fast, move fast, shoot fast.

This is, of course, because that dreaded electrical wall will be honing in on you, but also because by being quick you’ll automatically get a leg up over the rest of the competition. You’ll have more loot and the more you have the better the odds your gear will outperform your enemy.

PUBG is a numbers game at its heart, and the more numbers you have – be it bullets, damage potential or armour strength – the stronger your opportunities for success.

And when it comes to an assault, too many will play the peekaboo game where an enemy knows where they are and they’re coming for you. It’s tempting to lie in wait, but the openness of most the map here means that doesn’t always need to be an issue.

Don’t be rash, of course, but if you know you can get around the side of a building and through the back where your opposition last was, chances are he’s still there cautiously edging around corners trying to find you.

Surviving top 10

Of course, everything before at least top 20 is just trivial. If you die before this point then you’ve still got a lot of practicing to do.

Which means when it gets into the top 10, that’s where the pressure really beings to mount. You’ll have to try and handle that lump in your throat as well as you can, but keep a cool head.

Most important of all is to keep an eye on the circle. You’ll have just under two minutes from the point the game begins to start looting, after that you’ve got 5 minutes at decreasingly lower timers to make sure you’re within the confines of the boundaries.

But what about if you actually make it to the last or penultimate circle and you’re looking ready for chicken dinner? Well it’s important to take it steady and avoid the middle of the circle. At this point you’ll get sandwiched, and there’s a very low chance that you’ll survive such a situation.

While it does depend on the lay of the land, it’s important to keep a vigilant eye (and ear) out for any would-be attackers. And don’t overreach — If you’ve got a pretty secure spot, keep it. At this point, it’s a waiting game. Better that someone else slips up looking for kills than you.

Stealth is absolutely king at this point. Hide in bushes, crouch behind walls and avoid too much sound or movement. Do this and handle the tension, and you may well come out on top.
