The Backrooms 1998, a first-person found footage psychological horror game, is officiallycoming soon to PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch. This will be the game's first time on console, bringing accessibility to entirely new groups of players. The new title by Steelkrill Studio and Feardemic has historically only been available on Steam in its Early Access phase; there's no official release date yet.
The Backrooms: 1998 tells the story of a young teen who falls into the Backrooms during - you guessed it - the year of 1998. You'll be able to explore the Backrooms however you like, but beware - they aren't entirely safe.
"Prepare yourself for a survival horror experience like no other—Steelkrill Studio and Feardemic are ready to trap you in the terrifying maze of The Backrooms 1998," the game's publisher and developer tease. "Will you find your way out, or will the backrooms claim you?"
The full 1.0 release of The Backrooms 1998 is set to introduce numerous new features and improvements, from achievements and enhanced graphics to better jumpscares. Developers say it's an overall more "terrifying experience" thanks to the fine-tuned mechanics, too.
Though there's no official release date for the full 1.0 version of the game quite yet, here's what developers had to say about it: “Early access is going to take few months or maybe a couple of years - however this may change depending on features that we will be adding in the game and how the game will progress through early access. Please note, this game is being developed only by one developer and I will try to do my best in this to get the game released early, and with your help and support I can do just that!”
The game is available to wishlist on PlayStation and Steam right now.
