Star Citizen has now cost more to develop than the combined development costs of Grand Theft Auto V,Red Dead Redemption 2, and Cyberpunk 2077.
As revealed by PlayerAuctions, in terms of development costs, Grand Theft Auto V cost $137 million dollars, Red Dead Redemption 2 cost $170 million dollars and Cyberpunk 2077 cost $174 million dollars. Star Citizen, on the other hand, has cost a grand total of $590 million dollars, and it's not even been officially released as a final product yet.
Star Citizen was initially revealed through Kickstarter, quickly becoming one of the most expensive Kickstarter of all time. By the end of the initial pledge campaign, the developers managed to raise a grand total of $6.2 million, and by 2014, Guinness World Records had recognized a sum of almost $40 million as being the largest single amount ever raised via crowdsourcing.
Several controversies have arouse from this, with some claiming that the lack of a finished product shows signs that the developers are in over their heads and that people who pledged to the campaign have been scammed, but the developers maintain that progress on Star Citizen is going well and that they do intend for a commercial release in the future, though they've given no estimation as to when this may be.
