Final Fantasy XVI still hasn't been released yet, but Square Enix is teasing Final Fantasy VII Rebirth over on Twitter. In a recent tweet, they stated that you won't need to play Final Fantasy VII Remake before you play Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.
The tweet reads:
"Question: Do I need to play Final Fantasy VII Remake to enjoy Final Fantasy VII Rebirth? Answer: No - we have made preparations so that players who did not get a chance to play the first game can fully enjoy Final Fantasy VII Rebirth"
What's absolutely mystifying about this is that you can't really play Final Fantasy VII Remake on its own. The story in that game requires you to have played both the original Final Fantasy VII and Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII, a game that at the point of Remake's release was still stuck on the PSP with no port, to understand the plot of that game. The game ends with the appearance of a character that isn't mentioned once in the main story of Final Fantasy VII Remake, and that you only know if you've played another Final Fantasy VII game. It'll be interesting to see how Square Enix factors this into the game and makes it understandable for anybody.
