Rock on, Legends! It's been 15 years following the release of acclaimed developer Double Fine Productions' brutally awesome game Brütal Legend. The game first rocked onto consoles and PCs on 13th October 2009 and became one of the studio's best-selling releases until they repeated that feat with Psychonauts 2 years later as the game continues to build quite the explosive community.
Each year on the game's anniversary, affectionally called Rocktober 13th, Game Director and Double Fine founder Tim Schafer jumps into some epic multiplayer sessions in Brütal Legend, which, if players are lucky, may play alongside him. This year's Rocktober 13th saw Schafer playing Brütal Legend on Xbox console, but he also got to reflect on the game's 15th anniversary and provide some thoughts on the game's sequel.
Schafer sat down with the development team to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the action-adventure game Brütal Legend, leading to several discussions on the game's development, inspirations, casting, and more. While the anniversary continues to be celebrated within its dedicated community, it must be said that the team receives messages and tagged social media posts regarding a potential Brütal Legend sequel.
Well, at long last, Schafer finally responded to comments on why the studio has yet to work on a Brütal Legend sequel, which is being reported to not be "in the card for now," but it's certainly a thought that most have wondered 'about returning to." According to the Brütal Legend 15th anniversary developer post, Schafer responded on a possible sequel: "People ask about Brütal Legend 2 all the time, and I'm torn about that."
I know some of them want it with an evolution of the RTS stuff, and some of them just want God of War with Eddie Riggs. I understand the logic of making the second option, but I'm much more excited about the first.
Over the years, Brütal Legend has become one of the studio's most beloved games alongside Broken Age and Grim Fandango, and for Double Fine to see much love for the "games that stick with people over the years" is when they knew it had a "lasting effect" on the players and the studio. In terms of how that made them feel in light of Brütal Legend's 15th anniversary, Schafer added that every game they've produced "mattered to somebody," as "they’re all personal, they’re all games we put a distinct spin on."
Art is about making connections. You put yourself into this work of art, and someone says, “I see myself in that!” and that’s a beautiful thing. So it’s nice.
