Seven years after its release, Doki Doki Literature Club has reached a major milestone: 30 million players across all platforms.
“Doki Doki Literature Club Plus’ reception has continued to astound us since 2021, and we’re so thankful to the game’s loyal community for sticking with us all these years,” said Zhenghua Yang, founder of Serenity Forge.
The game was released back in 2017 and was downloaded by many fans before developers released DDLC Plus in 2021. The 2021 release brought the game to consoles, giving even more players an opportunity to try out the iconic psychological horror.
Doki Doki Literature Club hasn't received an update - bar the 2021 release - in several years, but Yang hinted that the games' future isn't over.
“Reaching 30 million players is incredible, and we can’t wait to show the community what we have in store next," Yang continued.
Doki Doki Literature Club puts players in the shoes of the "main character," who joins his high school's literature club with his long-time friend Sayori. He meets the other two members - Natsuki and Yuri - along with the club's president, Monika, and begins to grow closer to them - but things later take a darker turn. Developers say that their game is "hailed by millions as one of the most disturbing games in a generation."
