Mascot horror icon Poppy Playtime is coming to the big screen in a live-action feature adaptation by Legendary and Mob Entertainment, according to new information from the studios.
The Poppy Playtime games have taken off in popularity in the past few years, especially with the recent release of Chapter 3. In the Poppy Playtime franchise, players take on the role of an ex-employee who sets out to explore an abandoned toy factory and discover the horrors within. Characters like Huggy Wuggy, Mommy Long Legs, CatNap, and Poppy Playtime themselves have become mascots for the popular series thanks to their unique and colorful designs, garnering fanbases of their own.
Poppy Playtime isn't the only mascot horror game to get a film dedicated to it recently. Five Nights at Freddy's shattered box office records back in October 2023, with a second film already in production. Just a few months after that, Bendy and the Ink Machine developer and creator TheMeatly confirmed that a Bendy movie is coming sometime in the future. While news is scarce on the new Bendy movie, it's a testament to the growing popularity of mascot horror.
On that note, Poppy Playtime isn't Legendary's first horror title, either - but it is the studio's very first video game adaptation. If it goes well for the studio, it's possible that they could take a similar path to Blumhouse and focus on creating horror video game adaptations. Blumhouse is known for being the studio who created the FNAF Movie and is now not only working on a FNAF 2 film, but also a Dead by Daylight movie for Behaviour Interactive.
