We're diving headfirst into the release of Overwatch 2's Season 12. While there's plenty to be excited about, some ongoing issues remain, particularly with the Competitive Points System. Fans are becoming increasingly vocal about their frustrations as we enter a new season.
Let's delve into how the Competitive Points System operates and explore why it has become frustrating for players. Hopefully, we can also identify some potential solutions that Blizzard could implement to address these concerns moving forward.
Fans Bemoan The Competitive Points System In Overwatch 2
Overwatch 2 features various currencies that players can earn through gameplay or purchase with real-world money. Competitive Points are one such currency, earned by playing Competitive matches. After some iterations, the system now awards these points as you play, and once the Competitive season ends, they convert into Legacy Competitive Points.
Initially, both types of Competitive Points allowed players to purchase weapon variants. However, with the arrival of Season 10, this changed—new weapon variants for the current Season became purchasable only with Competitive Points, while Legacy Points could only be used to buy weapon variants from previous seasons. This change has frustrated many players, who feel the system has become more of a burden than a rewarding feature.
For instance, one player complained about losing around 2,000 points that were converted into Legacy Points, which would have been enough to buy a new Jade weapon variant; now, they must start from scratch. Many others echoed this sentiment, with one user comparing their point counts: “It’s extra frustrating. I have 1.4K old points and 1.6K new.”
This isn't the only issue players have raised regarding Competitive Points. Some fans have criticized the way these points are distributed, with one stating, “Only getting +10 instead of +25 for a win and no bonus end-of-season points is [really] lame.” Another fan expressed frustration over the abundance of currencies, saying, “Way too many currencies. And now my rewards are locked away. It makes me want to not play.”
Of course, some players, along with those defending Blizzard, can see the logic behind the current system. Allowing players with a large stockpile of Competitive Points to immediately buy new weapon variants would diminish their value, and balancing the points awarded per win or loss is challenging.
However, this seems like a situation where a compromise is needed. While players should temper their expectations, developers should also listen to fan feedback and consider refining how the Competitive Points system works overall.
