Overwatch 2's developers have long been criticized for overpriced skins and focusing on popular heroes like Mercy, Kiriko, and D.Va. Blizzard recently lowered prices on select skins in response, but the move has done little to satisfy players. Reactions remain lukewarm as frustrations persist over the game's monetization. Let’s break down the details.

Overwatch Discounts Older Skins, But Fans Remain Frustrated With the State of Skins in the Game

The recent Overwatch 2 shop rotation introduced three older Zombie skin recolors for Torbjorn, Soldier: 76, and Zarya at reduced prices. Typically priced at 1900 Overwatch Coins each, these recolors are now available for 500 Coins individually or 1000 Coins for the bundle. While this appears to be a better deal, fans were quick to point out that it doesn't address their long-standing concerns.

A Reddit thread emerged following the update, with players voicing their frustrations. One user remarked, "This is meaningless. I’ll believe it when a Mercy, Widow, or Kiriko skin is less than $19." Another added, "Even more meaningless is that they're dumb recolors of older skins that you can unlock for free with the legacy credits."

Other players speculated, "This is a huge test finally put into practice." Another echoed this sentiment, saying, "Yes, this is called a trial run. Try selling a skin that you won’t risk losing a lot of profit on and see if people buy it at those prices."

Skins and fan backlash
The backlash mainly stems from fans growing tired of seeing skins for popular heroes, while others are neglected or discounted because they're less desirable. (Picture: Blizzard)

However, this "test" does little to address broader issues players have raised, such as the high cost of new and exclusive skins, the convoluted process of unlocking Mythic skins, and the limited options for newer characters like Ramattra and Venture.

While this might be a step toward more player-friendly pricing, fans remain doubtful that Blizzard will deviate from its current profit-driven approach, especially with their most popular heroes driving sales.
