Since Overwatch 2 launched, few changes sparked as much debate as the switch from 6v6 to 5v5. While some players adjusted, many attributed ongoing issues like balance challenges and tank role fatigue to this change, and they’ve been vocal in requesting the return of 6v6.
Now, it seems the developers have listened, announcing that 6v6 will make a comeback in Season 14 as an experimental mode.
Experimental 5v5 and 6v6 Modes Announced for Overwatch 2 Seasons 13 and 14
In the latest Director’s Take blog, game director Aaron Keller unveiled plans for 6v6 test modes in Overwatch 2 Season 14. These tests will span two-week intervals, each featuring a different twist on the 6v6 format: the “Min 1, Max 3” mode and the more classic 2-2-2 role composition.

The “Min 1, Max 3” mode requires at least one hero per role but allows up to three, offering flexibility in team compositions. The classic 2-2-2 setup will bring back the original Overwatch structure, but with Overwatch 2’s design updates, giving players—especially newcomers—a chance to experience 6v6 in both formats.
Season 14 - 6v6 Test Modes
- Min 1, Max 3
- Date: December 17
- Each role must include at least one hero, with a maximum of three.
- 2-2-2

- Traditional 6v6 format with Overwatch 2 balance.
Additionally, Season 13 will introduce test modes for 5v5, including “Limit 2,” which restricts each role to two heroes, and “Kingmaker,” a special variant of Limit 2 that grants a powerful buff to the solo hero in each role.
Season 13 - 5v5 Test Modes
- Limit 2
- Coming soon
- Limits each role to two heroes, with tanks balanced for Open Queue.
- Kingmaker

These experimental modes in Seasons 13 and 14 represent bold steps for Overwatch 2. Stay tuned as we’ll continue to report on player feedback and any new information about these test modes.
