In the early stages of Outriders, some players might not really know what to do with all of the copious resources that keep stacking in the inventory. However, resources, like leather and iron, are especially useful once the story picks up.
Relating to iron specifically, some players have had a tough time finding the metal in the early parts of Outriders. However, luckily enough, it’s actually one of the most common materials to find and plays a huge role in upgrading your gear. Let’s see where you can find it and what you can do with it once it’s located.
Finding and using iron in Outriders
First and foremost, iron is most commonly found throughout the world on rock formations. It appears as a blue, mushroom-like object on rocks that can be harvested once you get close enough to it. Just hit the interact keybind and you’ll start mining it. This source of iron can be found in most areas of Outriders but will always be found along rock walls.

Once it’s been mined, it will fall to the ground where you can then pick it up and it will automatically be added to your inventory. You can check how much iron and other resources you have by going to your inventory and looking at the bottom-left of the screen.
Another way to acquire iron is to dismantle gear. You can do this by going to your inventory, right-clicking on the item you want to dismantle, and then holding the dismantle keybind. You won’t always receive iron from this but it’s another route.

If you want to actually use the resources you find though, you’ll have to wait until you reach the point of Outriders where Doctor Zahedi becomes available. Through him, you can upgrade your gear by improving its rarity, adding mods or changing the appearance of the item. Most of what you do through the doctor requires iron, so having a solid amount of it will help in the long run.
