It's been a wild few weeks with rumors and leaks running rampant online surrounding Nintendo's upcoming hardware release, the successor to the Nintendo Switch. More recently, after an accessory brand revealed replica models for the forthcoming console, despite Nintendo stating that those images and videos aren't official, they took matters into their own hands and revealed the Nintendo Switch 2.
The Switch successor was confirmed in a reveal trailer uploaded to the official Nintendo YouTube channel on 16th January 2025. Fans can also pencil in a date for the next Nintendo Direct presentation, coming 2nd April 2025, where the upcoming console will be given the spotlight in the upcoming presentation, and more details will be provided.
We've had knowledge of the console's existence since March 2015, and official hints had been made across the past several months until Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa confirmed the hardware would be announced before the end of the current fiscal year. Unfortunately, rumors and leaks made their way online, which may have frustrated higher-ups at Nintendo, but it certainly didn't deter the fan excitement.
In the console's official announcement trailer, we were treated to a first look, and, at first glance, the Switch 2 is noticeably larger than the original console. The Switch 2 retains the predecessor's hybrid model design for portable and home (or docked); the redesigned Joy-Cons are still detachable but now utilize magnets, which hopefully won't cause any Joy-Con drift issues relating to the controllers.
We'll have to wait until April 2025 for the Nintendo Direct presentation for more details regarding the Nintendo Switch 2, including its launch date, pre-ordering information, hardware specs, game releases, and more. It's already been confirmed that most Switch games and the Nintendo Switch Online subscription will be backward compatible with the new console at launch.
