The Symbiotes continue to cause much chaos and destruction amidst their presence, with debuting characters leaving their imprint in Marvel. The current week, which saw the arrival of Scorn, left quite an impression on the Discard archetype, which will officially be joined by a fellow ally (or opponent) in Agony.
This latest card release can be acquired for a limited time, much like previous card releases; however, how exactly is it not through the Spotlight Cache system? This guide entails everything Snappers may need to know about Agony, including how to obtain this card, its ability, key synergies and counters, and three decks to antagonize their opponents within Marvel Snap.
Marvel Snap Agony Card Abilities Explained
Agony is one of five lifeforms that were "forcibly spawned" from the Venom symbiote due to the experiments conducted by the Life Foundation, which had a few notable hosts throughout its appearance in the comics. It also merged with other symbiotes to form Hybrid before it split apart during the Carnage U.S.A. series, and bonded with Deadpool along with three other symbiotes to help the Merc with a Mouth track down Carnage and now its flying solo to aid other heroes (or villains) in need of extra support in Marvel Snap.
Agony debuts as a one-Cost and two Power card with a fascinating card ability, which the developer confirmed to be a Common Ability, which reads, "After you play a card here, merge this with it." The card, however, is a unique card release as its arrival coincides with the High Voltage game mode launch, which goes live once the daily refresh is completed.
Agony looks to be yet another great card that can work with most deck archetypes; however, early key synergies pin Deadpool, X-23, Wolverine, and Nimrod as some of the best cards to pair with Agony. Regarding the card's top counters, Elektra and, of course, Killmonger can easily remove Agony from the board before having the chance to merge it with the next card while Shadow King reset all cards at their location to their original values.
So, how exactly can Snappers get their hands on this agonizing card is done in two ways, as confirmed by Second Dinner: the first is from the Rewards Tracker when accumulating enough Volts through the High Voltage game mode. The second option is to wait until 31st October 2024 for the card to appear in the Token Shop rotation as a Series 4 card release, which may be priced at 3,000 Collector's Tokens.
Best Marvel Snap Agony Decks: Buffing Through The Web
As mentioned before, Agony's key synergies, which should help Snappers with deckbuilding, include Destroy and Move decks, but let's not forget some niched archetypes features, Namor and Namora, and power buffing cards that can benefit from Agony's ability. Agony's release makes this card one of a few cheap cards that can buff other cards, with Nico Minoru and Araña all being one-Cost cards.
The first spotlighted deck pivots towards buffing cards' power values, which aligns with what Agony provides and likewise in this deck from Marvel Snap content creator ReZ Snapper. What's intriguing about this deck is that while Sebastian Shaw is included, Silver Silver isn't as; instead, other cards have been factored in to ensure Shaw triggers his power buffing capabilities.
To ensure that Shaw's ability is triggered, Phastos and Gwenpool are added to the deck, with Forge being a reliable card to help Shaw buff his power. Araña is also featured, which can be activated to move Shaw and buff him, while Madame Web can be played to ensure that Human Torch and Dagger gain power and Brood and Scarlet Spider help fill locations.
Best Marvel Snap Agony Decks: Destroy In Agony
As expected, Agony's ability is similar to Hulkbuster but cheaper, perfectly synergizing with the Destroy archetype in every imaginable way. Sure, Snappers can still have Hulkbuster and Agony in the same deck to perhaps buff another card, but for now, this specific Deadpool Destroy deck only has space for Agony, and that doesn't hurt.
This new iteration of the Deadpool Destroy deck from Marvel Snap content creator DenHearthstone adds a new interaction with the inclusion of Araña, not Hulkbuster (which can be an option if they don't have Araña), to buff a card's Power before moving it to the right location. Some of the ideal cards to play into Agony for a massive power buff are Deadpool, Wolverine, and Venom, while X-23, Carnage, and Killmonger can play into Araña.
By this point, Snappers should have a discounted Death to be destroyed by Venom before Arnim Zola is on the board. If they have enough Energy, Knull will remain their final turn play, and if they've held onto Arnim Zola by then, it can be played after Knull, too.
Best Marvel Snap Agony Decks: Little Cards, Big Move
Lastly, the Move archetype can benefit from Agony's merging capabilities for greater power gains. Move often relies on power buffs to gain an advantage over their opponents due to their default power stat, and they usually need other cards to bump it up!
Increasing its power from small to large is the main priority and is supported by key cards that synergize with Agony, like Araña, Ghost-Spider, Iron Fist, Madame Web, Doctor Strange, and Heimdall. This is the case in this agonizing Move deck from Marvel Snap content creator PulseGlazer, which features the abovementioned support cards to help buff and move cards like the Human Torch, Dagger, and Vulture.
Multiple Man can be a really good target for Agony when played at its location, and likewise the same for Symbiote Spider-Man if they wish to buff either the Human Torch, Dagger, or Vulture. This could see massive power gained once Heimdall is played and after they've set their locations before the big move, but they should keep an eye out for their opponent's play in case Shang-Chi is utilized as a final turn card.
