DWG KIA’s Worlds 2021 run has been one of the most dominant we’ve ever seen in League’s competitive history, as they managed to take down every single challenge they had in front of them, finishing unbeaten in Groups against FunPlus Phoenix, Rogue and Cloud9.
In DWG's journey to defend their crown, the current world champions have been plagued with a lot of obstacles, as they have faced legendary squads wanting to take over their throne, such as T1 during the Summer Finals, however, they remain unphased thanks to the performance of players like Heo "ShowMaker" Su, who’s now being considered the best League player in the world.
Following today’s matches and successful first-place clinch at their group, the DWG KIA’s mid laner took some time to talk with the press about the state of his team, some personal thoughts around his EU solo queue experiences, and his opinions about the performance of his opponents.
On the broadcast, it kind of looked like Perkz and you were sharing some glances, maybe exchanging some /all chats. Did any conversation took place before or during the match, and if it did, what kind of conversation it was?
We were just fooling around in the /all chat because if we were to lose, C9 would be locked in for quarterfinals, and Perkz was going all around the chat saying like “I’m sorry” or things like “Go easy on us”, so we were just bantering back and forth.
Since many people think you’re the best player in the world and your team is the one to beat in Worlds, how do you deal with the pressure it brings with it?
I’m always trying to shake off the extra pressure so I don’t feel too overwhelmed. At the moment, I just try to keep myself in the best shape I can and do my best all the time.
Many have agreed you have become one of the faces of LoL esports, but if you had the chance to choose two other players from anywhere in the world, to help lead the future of League, who would they be and why?
[Laughs] Ah, I’ve never thought about it so it’s hard for me to answer, but one would definitely be Canyon and I don’t know about the second one.
How your experience has been with the EU solo queue this time around?
I’m in pain from time to time but I decided to have as much fun as I can while I’m here, so I’m just trying to focus on what I have to practice.
Did you lock in Kassadin because you can possibly get a Worlds skin for him if you win the finals?
[Laughs] It definitely wasn’t anything like that, I picked him because I thought it was a good pick.
With the Group Stage resolved, you demonstrated the supremacy of the actual world champions. How is the feeling of the team about this result, and what team do you see as your next rival?
Going 6-0 in the Group Stage is definitely a hard achievement, so we’re very happy about that, and for our next opponent, I think EDG are very good right now so I’m keeping an eye on them.
Given Rogue and Cloud9’s turnaround in the group against FPX, people are hoping for some other teams to make a similar performance in their own groups. Do you expect something similar to happen between the west and east teams?
Yes, I think I can also happen in the other groups as well, and there will be some interesting matches happening so I’m looking forward to it.
Since there is a slight chance you may face another LCK team in the Knockouts, what are your opinions around the performances of the other Korean teams at Worlds?
The other LCK teams also have a very hard group on their own as well, but I think they are holding up really well and I’m cheering for them.
What has been your most memorable moment from today? Was it the Kassadin play, helping Khan get the Pentakill, your chat with C9, or other you want to choose?
Khan’s Pentakill. Khan had been telling us it was one of his dreams carrying the game with top Lucian, so this became real today and we also got him a Pentakill on top of this, so seeing him do so well in this last year it’s definitely a treat.
ShowMaker’s journey at Worlds 2021 is set to continue on 22nd October, as the top eight teams from the Group Stage will being their path to the finals at the Knockout Stage.
