Becoming League of Legends world champions is one of the biggest dreams and accolades anyone can think of in the world of esports.
For eight teams, this is about to become a reality, with the start of the Worlds 2021 Playoffs closer than ever, and with only a few days ahead of the grand finals where one squad will raise the Summoner’s Cup in Iceland.
To commemorate this in a very special way, Riot Games has revealed an unprecedented collaboration with the luxury vehicle brand Mercedes Benz, who has worked with them to sponsor their international events and regional leagues for the past few months.
Thanks to this new alliance, and as is the tradition in world-class sports leagues such as the NBA and the NFL, the players who manage to conquer the 2021 World Championship will receive not only the winner's medal, but also a championship ring made of 18-karat white gold.
“Championship rings are a storied tradition in sports, synonymous with the highest achievements and unmatched excellence,” said Naz Aletaha, Riot’s global head of LoL Esports.
These personalised rings for each player will have sapphire and diamond inlays in the central part, where the trademark logo of the World Championship can be seen in a majestic way, while on the sides they will have patterns with the silver arrows of Mercedez Benz and the phrase "Worlds 2021."
In addition, each of the rings will also feature the player’s summoner name, and the team's tricode all displayed on the custom-fitted piece.
According to Riot, this ring took a year to design with a great effort on the part of both companies, in an attempt to reflect the glory of becoming the best team in the world. The rings were handcrafted by artists at GOOD ART HLYWD, a fine jewellery company located in Los Angeles, California.
The co-creation saw creatives across LoL Esports’ brand and event design team, responsible for producing cutting-edge global sports entertainment, join forces with Mercedes-Benz’s talented exterior designers responsible for bringing world-renowned automotive silhouettes to life.
“Since the start of our partnership in 2020, Mercedes-Benz has helped elevate and celebrate the best-of-the-best in LoL Esports, and we are thrilled to bring together our shared love for design and innovation to make a resounding mark on the crowning achievement of our sport,” concluded Naz Aletaha.
The official reveal of the championship ring is expected to take place during the Worlds 2021 grand finals, taking place on 6th November from the Laugardalshöll in Reykjavík, Iceland.
Prior to this, Mercedes-Benz and Riot Games will provide exclusive insights into the creation process of the Championship Ring in a short form documentary available on the official LoL Esports YouTube channel.
