When Hunt: Showdown transitioned to 1896, its rich lore was unexpectedly removed. After the game stabilized, the developers added a Mythos section to their website, but it remained mostly unchanged for months. Now, a new "Shocking Events" category has been added, bringing back familiar lore and introducing new content. However, fan reactions have been mixed.
Hunt: Showdown Unveils New Lore Category, "Shocking Events," but Player Reactions Are Mixed
As Crytek recently shared on X, the official Hunt: Showdown Mythos website has been updated with a new section called "Shocking Event." This section dives into the lore behind key events in the game’s timeline, including:
- Tide of Shadows
- Tide of Corruption
- Tide of Desolation
- Desolation’s Wake
- Scorched Earth

However, some notable events, like the Moon events and the recent Post Malone’s Murder Circus event, are missing. Fans can likely expect these to be added in the future. For now, it's great to finally get some fresh lore to dig into while we wait for more content, though not all fans are thrilled with the update.
One major complaint is that the game’s lore exists outside of the actual game, rather than being integrated into the title you paid for. I understand this frustration, and it makes me think about how I would feel if FromSoftware created an external lore website for Elden Ring or the Souls series. On the one hand, I'd appreciate it, but on the other, I’d feel that they could have woven it into the game itself—something Hunt: Showdown 1896 fans likely feel as well.
Another concern from players is that, for now, they’re more focused on wanting bug fixes and UI improvements. Replies to the lore post show many asking the developers to prioritize performance and interface updates instead. Of course, producing quality lore is easier than fixing bugs and UI issues, so it seems the devs are giving us lore to enjoy in the meantime while they work on the more technical fixes.
For now, we know the developers are working hard on critical bug fixes and quality-of-life updates, as outlined in their sneak peek at Update 2.3, which fans have largely supported. From my perspective, it might be worth cutting Crytek some slack and enjoying the new lore in this "Shocking Events" section while we wait to see how their next big update for Hunt: Showdown unfolds.
