Honkai: Star Rail is a sprawling turn-based RPG with an emphasis on character progression. Courtesy of its gacha nature, you get to play several characters in the game. 

Like in Genshin Impact, you can increase the level of your characters in Honkai: Star Rail by using different items in the game. However, after reaching certain milestones, you will need to ascend your character before you can start leveling them up again. Here's how ascension works in Honkai: Star Rail. 

What is Ascension in Honkai: Star Rail

Ascension is a like a barrier which you need to overcome to level up your character. The first Ascension barrier appears when your character reaches level 20. As of this writing, there are six Ascension levels in the game. 

How to Ascend characters in Honkai: Star Rail

To Ascend your characters in Honkai: Star Rail, you will need Ascension Materials. Every character's Ascension requires different Ascension Materials, and you can click on their image on the screen to find out where you can farm these materials. If you have been exploring the world, completing side quests, and farming Calyxs, chances are, you probably have all the materials you need. 

The current level cap for each character in the game is 80, and you will have to Ascend your character six times to reach there. Ascending characters will unlock new skill branches in the Traces section.
