How to get and use the Discarded Palace Key in Elden Ring

As you venture through the Lands Between in Elden Ring, you will come across various Key Items that will be useful to you by unlocking areas and quests and progressing the game's story. One of these items you'll need to locate is the Discarded Palace Key, part of Ranni's questline.
Ranni's questline is quite detailed and long, so keeping track of events and items may be hard to remember. We'll give you the details surrounding the item and a full breakdown of how to find and use the Discarded Palace Key in Elden Ring. 

Where to find the Discarded Palace Key in Elden Ring?

To find the Discarded Palace Key, you will need to defeat the Baleful Shadow, as the key gets dropped once you defeat it. The Baleful Shadow can be challenged as you progress further with Ranni's questline.

Once you progress until you've reached Renna's Rise, you can access the teleport that will take you to the hidden Part of the Ainsel River. After arriving, there's a coffin just ahead of where you can speak to Miniature Ranni, exhaust her dialogue before heading into the cave and continue until you reach Nokstella, Eternal City.

Eventually, you will reach a wall on your left with an elevator, take the elevator down, and go straight ahead once at the bottom. You'll locate the invading boss fight, the Baleful Shadow, a challenging enemy but not impossible.

With the right fight strategy, you'll be able to easily defeat the Baleful Shadow before continuing with Ranni's questline. Defeating him will reward you with the Discarded Palace Key as an item drop.

Where to use the Discarded Palace Key in Elden Ring?

Once you have the Discarded Palace Key, head to the Raya Lucaira Academy, where you would have progressed through its questline until you've defeated Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon. Locate Rennala in the main room and find a locked chest behind her which can only be unlocked with the Discarded Palace Key.

After you've unlocked it, you will receive an item inside, the Dark Moon Ring. The Ring can be used to complete Ranni's questline and continue your journey as the Tarnished One.

Giving her the Ring, you will also be able to find the Dark Moon Greatsword below the Cathedral of Manus Celes as a collectable item. Additionally, completing her questline unlocks one of the game's main endings, the Age of the Stars and its associated achievement.
