Whether you're looking to use the classics like Goku and Vegeta or seeking something more unique like taking Baby Vegeta all the way to Great Ape Baby, it's important to know how and when transformations can happen in Sparking Zero. You won't have access the moment a battle begins, but it won't take long for them to unlock.

Every character has a Skill Count attached to each of their transformations. Goku spends three to go to Super Saiyan Blue, so you'd have to continue battling until your Skill Count matches what is needed. If you've recently switched characters, indicated by the yellow icon by Skill Count, you will need to wait to transform but only until it's about a quarter of the way filled.

As for the Dragon Ball Sparking Zero controls, just hold Up on the D-Pad to see your list of transformation options. This won't appear or react to holding Up on the D-Pad unless you have enough Skill Count for a transformation and any character switch cooldown has ended, but once accessible you'll also see the blue icon appear next to Skill Count. The number on that indicates how many different transformations you have access to with your current Skill Count.

Most players may prefer to just start with the advanced form or fusion they have in mind, but most of the fusions in Dragon Ball Sparking Zero are actually able to be performed in a battle. However, you need to have all the characters that will fuse on your team. For example, to fusion into Vegito or Gogeta in battle you would need compatible forms on your team.

You'd need Vegeta (Super) and Goku (Super) to gain access to an in-battle fusion into Gogeta (Super) or Vegito (Super). Swapping either option with a Z or GT version won't allow the fusion. You do just need to wait for the Skill Count like a transformation, but the big difference is that you can't separate while the battle is ongoing.

That means you are risking the loss of two fighters should the fusion get eliminated. Similarly, many transformations to a huge character such as Vegeta (Z - Scouter) to Great Ape Vegeta or Lord Slug into his giant form cannot be undone in an ongoing battle. These can be powerful weapons in Dragon Ball Sparking Zero, but make sure you're not putting yourself at risk depending on how your battle or tournament is going.
