Valve Removes CS2 Jump-Throw Binds, Bans Snap-Tap Usage

Valve has drawn a clear line for automation in CS2, removing binds that use more than one movement/attack and putting an end to Snap Tap features.

Late in the evening of 19 August 2024, Valve released a new Counter-Strike 2 (CS2) update and many fans might not have even noticed it. However, the update does have a huge impact, as it takes away keybinds that combine more than one movement/attack action, which includes the iconic Jump-Throw.

Some minor scripting and automation have always been part of Counter-Strike in some form or another, and Jump-Throw is a great example, as the developer even went as far as to make it more reliable in-game without a special keybind.

In a blog post aptly entitled "Side-stepping skill," Valve has made its stance on automation and some types of scripting abundantly clear. The developer explains that:

Developing one's coordination and reaction time has always been key to mastering Counter-Strike. Recently, some hardware features have blurred the line between manual input and automation, so we've decided to draw a clear line on what is or isn't acceptable in Counter-Strike. We are no longer going to allow automation (via scripting or hardware) that circumvent these core skills and, moving forward, (and initially--exclusively on Valve Official Servers) players suspected of automating multiple player actions from a single game input may be kicked from their match.

So what does this mean? Well, if you own a keyboard that has input-automation features such as Razer's Snap Tap Mode, you should disable it to prevent getting kicked out of a match. Further, keybinds that have more than one movement/player action won't work, and that includes jump-throws.

If you have a keyboard that includes an input-automation feature (e.g., "Snap Tap Mode"), be sure to disable the feature before you join a match in order to avoid any interruption to your matches.

CS2 Update (20 August) Patch Notes

[ INPUT ]

  • Certain types of movement/shooting input automation such as hardware-assisted counter strafing will now be detected on Valve official servers, resulting in a kick from the match
  • Input binds that include more than one of the following commands will now be ignored by default. Support can be re-enabled using the cheat-protected convar `cl_allow_multi_input_binds 1`
    • sprint, reload, attack, attack2, turnleft, turnright, turnup, turndown, forward, back, left, right, moveup, movedown, klook, use, jump, duck, strafe, zoom, yaw, pitch, forwardback, rightleft
  • The jump-throw confirmation grunt sound can now be heard by other players nearby

[ VacNet ]

  • Initial testing of VacNet 3.0 has begun on a limited set of matches. If you believe your match was incorrectly cancelled, email us the match details at csgoteamfeedback@valvesoftware.com

This move wasn't as unexpected as some fans might indicate by screaming very loudly. Using Snap Tap type of functionality does give CS2 players with the right hardware, such as a very expensive Razer keyboard, an advantage over others, and automates too much.

The change does come just days before the Perfect World Shanghai Major qualifiers begin, however, so it will be interesting to see if there's any impact.
