Water symbolizes purity and clarity across multiple cultures and religions, and in video games, it is often used to communicate philosophical questions about life or a character. Aloft, a game with strong environmental themes and messages, takes a more productive approach within this survival world as players must remove corruption from the floating islands, which affects the ecosystem and the water sources.

While it may be a resource in-game, Dirty Water can be valuable, especially when purified or cleansed, provided players have the resources and knowledge to achieve this. This guide details how players can get their hands on Dirty Water, purify it, and use it in Aloft.

Dirty Water is one of the many resources players can find and collect during their explorations across the floating islands. Dirty Water is plentiful on multiple islands, including the starting island; however, it isn't safe for consumption, but there is a way to mitigate this problem.

Firstly, finding Dirty Water is extremely easy as they can find a handful of floating islands with a water source, whether it be a pond, river, or waterfall like the starting island. Once they've located the water source, they can step foot into the water and hover over it to perform the action of collecting water.

This adds Dirty Water to the Inventory, which can be accessed by hitting the TAB key, and they can find it under the Resources tab. The next is what to do with the Dirty Water, which can be purified or cleansed, but they'll need access to the Workbench Station.

If they haven't received the blueprint, they must find a Knowledge Stone on the starting island to get it and have it crafted. Additionally, they'll need to forage Charcoal from the burned tree stumps found on most islands before they can progress.

Access the Workbench Station crafting menu and select the first icon to the left of the screen where they'll find their resources. Combine one Dirty Water and Charcoal into the hopper to the right to learn the Clean Water blueprint, and select the fourth icon, which will allow them to craft Clean Water.

As for what can Clean Water to be used, once it has been purified to receive this by-product, it can be consumed to satisfy their needs if equipped to the hotbar or from their Inventory. Lastly, it can be used to water crops planted within the farming boxes and hydrate animals and livestock found on other islands brought back to their home base.
