Despite a general lack of international honours, Portugal has given football some of its most influential players in history. From the legendary Black Panther, Eusébio, to the everlasting Cristiano Ronaldo, there's no shortage of iconic ballers.

One that undoubtedly deserves a spot on that list is, of course, Luis Figo. The Almada born midfielder was a dazzling player during the mid-90s and early 2000s.

Making his professional debut in 1989 with Sporting CP in Portugal, Figo's proper breakthrough season came two years later, establishing himself as a starter at just 18 years of age.

Four seasons as a key part of Sporting later and Barcelona came knocking on their door, securing the services of the young creative midfielder in 1995. Touted as one to help Los Culés compete with fierce rivals Real Madrid, Figo helped Barcelona lift a few titles, including LaLiga in 1988 and 1999, the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup in 1997, and the UEFA Super Cup in 1997.

His transfer to Real Madrid in 2000 is still regarded as the most controversial move in football history, with Barcelona fans feeling betrayed by the Portuguese, who was entering the peak of his career, being 28-years-old at the time he decided to leave the Blaugranas behind.

That same year, Figo would win the Ballon d'Or, a sign for what would come during his time with Los Merengues, where he added more domestic trophies, but more importantly, his one and only Champions League medal in 2001.

At 33, Figo finally left Spain to spend the remainder of his career with Italy giants Inter Milan. Adapting his style to compensate for his lack of pace, Figo became less of an offensive threat, nonetheless, the Portuguese added a whooping six domestic titles until he retired in 2009.
