In Baldur's Gate 3, stats are tied to leveling and how you create your character. This is taken directly from the way that stats work in Dungeons & Dragons Fifth Edition, as dictated by the Player's Handbook, but how exactly does that translate to a video game?
How Stats Work In Baldur's Gate 3
Baldur's Gate 3 uses the following stats to work out various different elements of the game, including roleplay and combat.
- Strength
- Dexterity
- Constitution
- Intelligence
- Wisdom
- Charisma
Strength is used for what you might expect, feats of bodily power and destruction. Dexterity is used for athletics and physical agility, so stuff like doing flips. Constitution is how you increase your health and stamina, so increasing those numbers is vital to your survival.
Intelligence is used for information checks, arcana checks, and things of that nature that require you to actually have passing knowledge. Wisdom might sound like the same thing, but it's actually used for awareness, intuition and actually knowing what's going on in your current situation rather than in history. The best way to describe it is that intelligence is what happened, and Wisdom is what's happening right now. The final one is Charisma, used for flirtation and leadership, and is integral to classes such as a Bard.
Certain classes and races also specialize in certain stats, so you need to experiment to get the best possible experience.
Some of the skill checks that the game performs will be automatically carried out and performed without rolling a dice in-game, with a pop-up appearing to let you know if you've succeeded or failed. Based on this, the game will change and the consequences will be different.
